Bloggers Blog: MySpace Cuts 400 Jobs

  • Matt · 6 months ago
I agree that the job cut could be a result from the economy, but I also think that myspace is starting to become a has-been in the social networking world. It's certainly not there yet, but Facebook is beginning to acquire many of the same tools/options as myspace plus some, so there's certainly more wind under Facebook's wings. Myspace will only sink under water.

MySpace needs to make a serious choice now to avoid becoming yesterday's social networking site. I think a focus on music is the way forward and I've explained what I'd do in a blog post that I wrote on Friday. And a little bit over the weekend. And this morning (it's a biggy).

I read somewhere that if MySpace can't run itself on 750 staff, it shouldn't be in business. I think I subscribe to that view - in order to succeed, MySpace must streamline. That means it should be easily operable on less staff, though that obviously ignores the human stories behind the redundancies.

According to Google trends tools Facebook has surpassed MySpace in Feb 2009 web search volume in the US.
Globally MySpace has lost the race longer ago. Although not as popular in terms of search volume is Twitter another competitor making MySpace´s world harder. Yes, Twitter got its own challenges still ahead in terms of revenue and the general outlook, but I as a user got nowa days time to get into my facebook and email account when and then check some tweets, that´s it. MySpace-what for?got no time and see no added value!
At my company http://www.activagers.com we focus on social network for young bby boomers-basta!Clear focus niche. Our members even argue about facebook being their target, too youngish they say. And MySpace? Some don´t even know exactly what it is, aside being social network. Laying off staff won´t do it. Maybe the whole newscorp idea wasn´t good at all, beside the casholas for the now ousted founders!
